Where oil spills occur on the open sea or on the shore area the spread of oil can be prevented by the use of barriers and then the oil has to be collected by oil collection vessels or skimmers equipped with brushes. (Image © SYKE)
In arctic areas there in also lots of traffic. Recovering oil from icy water is the most challenging task, in which Finnish environment authorities and companies working with oil recovery are experts in.
The scope of the project was to study different filament materials, their properties and applicability for oil recovery in arctic circumstances.
One of the most important properties to find out were filaments’ hydrophobic properties and their ability to adhere different oil types. In addition to the properties to collect oil, filaments had to function in cold temperatures and to withstand hot steam and water, mechanical abrasion and UV radiation of the sun.
Project was part of Arctic Seas program of the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes).
